I’m no stranger to a luxury hotel and the finer things in life that are so often associated with boutique accommodation. I’m also not exempt in truly appreciating the indulgence that touches of luxury deliver.
Certainly a subjective notion, luxury is in the eye of the beholder. My idea of luxury is being spoilt. My luxury is in the non-essential, though welcome additions; the perfect scent, a soft throw, a sumptuous texture….
No matter your style, be it modern, traditional, contemporary or anywhere between, these simple ploys are my tricks to add a touch of the luxury lifestyle at home and bask in the indulgence of delight and spoil.
1. Opulent Texture
Easy to omit, yet one of the simplest to romanticise, a bedroom can benefit from soft lighting and swathes of rich texture.
“With the right amount, the luxurious texture can enhance any room with elegant flair. It’s no surprise that velvet has been used throughout the centuries by society’s aristocrats and royalty in fashion and in the home; it’s plush, rich and sumptuous.”
I couldn’t agree more. Try a simple velvet throw on your bed, or perhaps some scatter cushions to instantly recreate the luxury qualities so inherent in velvets. An elegant occasional chair upholstered in rich velvet is the ultimate in luxe bedroom decor, and one addition that won’t go unnoticed for its element of refined sensibility.
Although I am somewhat biased towards a texture such as velvet and the intrinsic affluence it suggests, other sumptuous textures such as wool and silk certainly hold a special place in my design repertoire…
Your ideal bedroom retreat may be moody and luxe, or it could be fresh and bright, either way, lighting is key. For an on-trend aesthetic, try two pendants, or sconce lights above your nightstands, or for a less permanent addition, slender floor lamps are having a moment in vogue, bedside.
Not to be forgotten, the traditional table lamp offers never ending stylish opportunities, no matter your aesthetic direction…
3. The Bathroom
The easiest and the quickest room to optimise with luxe; enter smooth scents & fragrances, luxury soaps, fluffy towels and a small bouquet of fresh blooms… Go one step further with an elegant tray to display pretty perfume bottles or only the most indulgent of facial oils and old school shaving accessories.
4. The Entrance
“You’ll never get a second chance to make a good first impression”
A first impression is paramount, but why not aim to create a lasting impression? Make for a welcoming and elegant entrance with a well-placed hall console or entrance table. If your entrance space is compact or limited, consider creating the illusion of expanse with a wall mirror.
Meanwhile, the engagement of a grand floral arrangement complimented with the measured placement of décor will struggle go amiss. Lasting impression? Tick.
It’s no secret that drapery, statement lighting, luxe layers and an orderly space are interior game changers on their own, though speak volumes for high-end design when used in conjunction and union with one another.
One of the most dramatic additions, the right drapery adds a luxe, almost theatrical appeal to a living space and dining room. Consider materiality to compliment your existing furnishings, but provide the whole space with a lavish boost.
7. Statement Lighting
Acting as a functional art piece, statement lighting promises a dramatic interior addition and there’s no denying the sophisticated appeal of a luxe statement chandelier or pendant.
The ultimate in luxury, space can be elusive at home. Create the fundamental in spacial desire through use of storage baskets (affordable) and storage units (investment) to unclutter space and create an atmosphere of restorative calm. The storage unit, credenza, sideboard, buffet; whichever piece you choose, there are an abundance in styles and finishes to perfectly compliment your home, all the while providing endless prospects for a touch of luxury.
Astutely placed décor pieces provide for desirable interior appeal, and are certainly an opportunity to reflect personality within your interior. Cushions, rugs, lighting, art and divine décor objects request considered layering, to enhance any living space with luxury appeal.
Indulgent vignettes of expertly placed décor and homewares in a variety of textures and hues are the finishing touch to any space.
Worthy of a headline all their own, metallics promise (and practically ooze) luxury and glamour.
Able to be sourced across nearly all furniture and décor categories, metallics can be statement making, or comparatively, provide the opportunity for a refined touch of understated elegance.
